CrossFit is a fitness program that combines variations of olympic style weightlifting, gymnastics and intense cardio. It’s challenging but it’s also a lot of fun. Here are 10 reasons why you should consider trying it.
1. You’ll learn proper form.
Walking into a Crossfit Gym or Box with little to no knowledge of how to do the exercises is actually expected. Most boxes require new athletes to complete a basics course that covers equipment usage, proper lifting form and commonly used CrossFit terminology.
2. Variety, variety, variety.
Who knew that there were so many different varieties of squats. A typical Crossfit class is made up of a strength and power exercise portion and then a WOD (workout of the day). Pronounced like pod but with a “w”. A WOD is made up of constantly varied, high-intensity movements. Over the course of one WOD you may be running, rowing, swinging kettlebells and working on gymnastic moves like ring dips and handstands. A timer is used throughout the class and keep athletes in constant motion and on track.
3. Say goodbye to your scale.
CrossFit is all about measuring your results, not your weight. Most CrossFit boxes have whiteboards where members can keep track of their PRs (personal records) for specific workouts. You can also keep track of these results on your own in a notebook or an app. Prepare to high-five your classmates when you beat a PR.
4. You’ll look and feel like an athlete.
The constantly varied nature of CrossFit, you get to exercise every part of your body, with specific emphasis on the glutes and thighs. Lots of squats, mean a perkier butt. The increase in muscle mass also helps to improve metabolism. You’ll stand up straighter and feel stronger (Read this as very sore when you start out and eventually just sore enough to know you did something on a daily basis.)
5. Everything can be scaled and modified.
Take a look at a typical class at any box and you’ll see people of all ages, experience levels and ability, but everyone is getting in a great workout. That’s because scaling weight appropriately is encouraged, and nearly all CrossFit movements can be modified. Can’t do ring dips? There’s a modification for that. Can’t do pull-ups? Use a band. Still too hard? Use two bands. Working on form? Just use the bar with no weight. Working your way up to the proper weight and movements will take time.
6. Crossfit is a community.
The best coaches and boxes create a sense of teamwork and camaraderie. Have you ever been cheered on by other people in the gym as you finish your workout? That happens everyday at a Crossfit Box. Also, athletes who start CrossFit around the same time often form a special bond as they improve and grow together.
7. Not much time, no problem.
If you’ve only got one hour to work out, CrossFit is your best bet. Most WODs include a mix of cardio and weight training. You’ll be surprised how fast you can accelerate your heart rate with a 10-minute mix of burpees, push-ups and air squats.
8. Say goodbye to the stationary bike and the DREADmill.
How many hours have you spent on stationary bikes, treadmills, and elliptical machines trying to “burn calories”? These machines will no longer be a part of your vocabulary. Crossfit focuses on functional fitness, pulling yourself up, lifting things off the floor, jumping on or over things. Sounds like fun doesn’t it, and nobody ever mentions burning calories.
9. It’s an investment in you.
Has life got you down? Are you bored at your job? Do you feel like you constantly give to others and leave nothing for yourself? Do you feel like you could do more with your life but haven’t? Crossfit is the gift that you give to yourself everyday. Yes, it is a decent monthly investment to be a part of the CrossFit community but the feeling you get when you finish a WOD is like nothing else. You’ll do things that very few people in your life outside of Crossfit have even attempted. You’ll be proud of what you’ve accomplished, knowing what you got through in the gym means you could probably conquer anything outside as well.
10. Bragging rights.
There’s a joke: How do you know someone does CrossFit? Answer: They tell you that they do CrossFit. Ha ha! It’s true, people who do CrossFit do talk about it a lot. But it’s not because they’re bragging or feel like they are better than you. Honestly, the reason they talk about it so much is because they love it and it’s changed their life in so many ways. They’re talking to you because they probably want you to join and be a part of the amazing Crossfit community. You’ll be surprised by how much you talk about it once you join.
Some people call Crossfit a cult but it’s more like a movement. A fitness movement that uses basic exercises in an intense format to get people into the best shape of their lives. It’s also a community of like minded individuals who come together daily to encourage each other to try and give their best and improve. People who do Crossfit look and feel strong, they have confidence in everything that they do and they want to share those feelings and experiences with others. You should join them.
